Your Own Balcony Solar System in 5 Steps

From unboxing to your first self-generated kilowatt-hour -- safely, legally, and without an electrician.

Before You Start: Check These 4 Things

Outdoor outlet available

You need a weatherproof Schuko outlet on your balcony or nearby. A standard household outlet is sufficient.

Check your electricity meter

If you still have an old Ferraris meter (spinning disc), your grid operator must replace it with a bidirectional meter free of charge. A digital meter or smart meter works right away. Until the swap, the meter may temporarily run backwards.

Wi-Fi signal at the balcony

Most inverters connect via Wi-Fi to your monitoring app. Check the signal strength at the planned mounting position.

Permission clarified

Since the Solar Package I (2024), tenants have a legal right to install balcony solar systems. Landlords can only refuse in exceptional cases. Inform them beforehand.

What Do I Need for a Balcony Solar System?

A balcony solar system consists of three main components. You can buy them separately or as a complete kit -- ensuring all parts are perfectly matched.

Solar Panels

The panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC). Standard for balconies are 1--2 modules rated at 400--450 Wp each. Bifacial modules also capture reflected light from the building wall.

Micro-Inverter

Converts the DC power from the panels into 230 V AC and feeds it into your home grid. Since 2024, the maximum output is capped at 800 W in Germany. Most kits already include a matching micro-inverter (e.g. Hoymiles, Deye).

Battery Storage (optional)

A battery (1--2 kWh) stores excess energy for the evening hours. Especially useful if you use little electricity during the day. Without storage, unused power flows into the grid for free.

Is a Balcony Solar System Safe?

Yes -- certified balcony solar systems are safe. Here is what you should know:

  • 01 Anti-islanding protection: In case of a power outage, the inverter immediately disconnects from the grid. No danger for utility workers.
  • 02 Schuko plug permitted: Since 2024 officially allowed in Germany (VDE V 0126-95). The maximum feed-in of 800 W is well below the capacity of a household outlet (3,680 W).
  • 03 No electric shock risk: The AC side runs at 230 V like any household appliance. The DC voltage of the panels is about 30--40 V per module -- unpleasant but not life-threatening.
  • 04 Minimal fire risk: No fire incident has been documented with CE and VDE certified devices in Germany. Look for VDE-AR-N 4105 and IEC 62109 certifications.

Prepare the mounting location

Prerequisite

Your balcony must support the weight. A standard panel weighs about 20-25 kg. If unsure, consult your building management or a structural engineer.

Measure your balcony carefully. Attach the mounting brackets to the solar panels before lifting them over the railing. Make sure the tilt angle is firmly locked.

If mounting on a flat roof, weigh down the tilt frame with concrete slabs to keep the panels secure in storms.

Safety: Always work in pairs!

From the first floor up, always work with a second person. Solar panels are bulky and can become dangerous in wind gusts.

Hang the panels on the railing and secure them immediately with safety screws or steel cables. Important: The panels generate voltage as soon as light hits them -- never touch the exposed metal contacts of the cables.

Attach and wire the inverter

Mount the inverter on the bracket behind one of the panels (in the shade). Connect the short DC cables (MC4 connectors) from the solar panels to the inverter inputs.

A clear "click" indicates that the MC4 connectors are watertight and locked. Verify by gently pulling on each connection.

Connect to the power grid

Follow this order!

The inverter must be connected to the panels before plugging it into the outlet. First DC (solar panels), then AC (outlet).

Take the long AC cable (Schuko) and connect it to the inverter first. Then plug the Schuko plug into your outdoor outlet.

The inverter will blink (often red, then green) -- it is synchronizing with the power grid. After about 2 to 3 minutes, the first electricity is being fed in.

Legal since 2024

In Germany, balcony solar systems may be connected via a standard Schuko outlet, provided the components are certified according to VDE V 0126-95. A Wieland plug is no longer mandatory.

Register your system

Deadline: 30 days

Registration must be completed within 30 days of commissioning.

Create an account in the Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR) at the Federal Network Agency. Enter your panel output, the 800-watt inverter limit, and the commissioning date.

Simplified registration

Since the Solar Package I, notification to the local grid operator is no longer required. The MaStR registration with just a few details (device, power output, meter number) is sufficient.
