Portable Power Stations -- simply explained

What capacity do I need? What connectors are there? What can I power? Your introduction to mobile energy.

What Is a Portable Power Station?

A portable power station is a large, rechargeable battery with a built-in inverter. It converts stored energy into 230 V AC power, providing standard household outlets anywhere there is no grid connection.

Unlike a petrol generator, it operates silently, emission-free and can be used indoors. Charge it via wall outlet, solar panel or 12 V car socket.

ℹ️

LFP vs. NMC

Modern power stations almost exclusively use LFP batteries (LiFePO4). These offer 3,000--4,000 charge cycles (vs. 500--800 for NMC), are non-flammable and handle deep discharge better. NMC cells are lighter but shorter-lived.

What Capacity Do I Need?

Capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh). Rule of thumb: add up the power draw of all devices you want to run and multiply by the planned usage time.

300 Wh

Day Trip

Phones, camera, drone, LED light. 1--2 days of light camping. Weight: ~3--4 kg.

1,000 Wh

Weekend Camping

Cooler, laptop, lights, phone charging. 2--4 days with solar. Weight: ~10--13 kg.

2,000+ Wh

Backup / Van Life

Fridge, coffee maker, power tools, e-bike. Expandable to 4--8 kWh. Weight: ~18--29 kg.

Continuous vs. Peak Power

The AC output rating (e.g. 2000 W) is the continuous power. Peak power (e.g. 4000 W) applies only for a few seconds when motors start up. Your device must stay below the continuous rating.

Connectors & Ports

Outputs

  • AC230 V outlets: For all household devices. Pure sine wave is standard.
  • USB-CUSB-C PD (up to 140 W): For laptops, tablets, phones. Some models support bidirectional USB-C charging.
  • USB-AUSB-A (up to 18 W): For older devices, cameras, power banks.
  • 12 V12 V car outlet: For car coolers, 12 V compressors and camping accessories.

Solar Inputs

  • XT60Standard for EcoFlow and Anker. Compact and reliable.
  • MC4Industry standard for solar panels. Waterproof (IP67). Used by Bluetti.
  • AndersonStandard for Jackery. Easy to connect but not universal.
ℹ️

Compatibility

Stick to one brand ecosystem (e.g. Anker station + Anker panel) for best compatibility. Adapters work but add a potential failure point.

Use Cases

Camping & Outdoor

Cooler, lights, phones, camera. Self-sufficient for days with a solar panel. Compact models (300--800 Wh) cover most trips.

Recommended: 300--1,000 Wh, under 10 kg

Camper Van / RV

A permanently installed power station replaces the auxiliary battery. Benefits: LFP longevity, built-in inverter, app monitoring. Rooftop solar charges while driving.

Recommended: 1,000--2,000 Wh, expandable, UPS function

Backup Power / Home Office

During a power outage, a UPS-capable station keeps router, NAS and laptop running seamlessly (switchover time 10--20 ms). For a fridge, you need at least 1,000 Wh.

Recommended: 1,000--2,000+ Wh, UPS, expandable

Job Site / Garden / Events

Power tools, PA systems, lighting. For devices above 1,500 W, the station needs at least 2,000 W continuous output.

Recommended: 1,000--2,000 Wh, 2,000+ W AC output
